Internationalization at The Chicago School

“Fostering leadership, learning and empathy between cultures was and remains the purpose of the international scholarship program.” Senator William Fulbright

The Chicago School’s mission is to be at the forefront in the internationalization of psychology. We endeavor to be leaders in creating models, grounded in theory and research, which fully appreciate and integrate culture in addressing issues of psychological distress, and emotional well-being that all human beings experience. We also endeavor to carry out this leadership in a way that is consistent with The Chicago School’s mission of focus on practice, service, and community.

To fulfill this mission, we will:

  • engage our faculty and students in understanding the implications of cultural differences for psychological theory, research, and practice;
  • engage our faculty and students in scholarship, research, and practice which contributes to a conceptualization of international psychology;
  • encourage our faculty and students in their personal discovery of the values and practices of different cultures through international travel, study abroad programs, TCS visiting scholars and students, and involvement in the rich cultural diversity of Chicago;
  • encourage our faculty and students to participate in community service projects locally and abroad;
  • encourage our faculty and students to understand how national and international political and social systems impact the delivery of services and to develop expertise in negotiating these systems in order to deliver services nationally and internationally.

To fulfill this mission, The Chicago School is committed to:

  • participate in international service projects that enable our faculty and students to apply psychology to communities in need, are grounded in our values of respect for human differences and human rights, and appreciate the role of culturally specific values and practices in addressing psychological issues in other countries;
  • participate in international relationships and projects that leverage The Chicago School’s strengths as an institution and/or support its continued development in ways that are consistent with The School’s mission;
  • establish partnerships in overseas countries with like-minded individuals, academic institutions, social service organizations, and governments;
  • seek out opportunities abroad to bring awareness of psychology and psychological issues to other countries.
